About
I’m Cal,
I am a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (MA Classic & Contemporary Text: Directing) and Stirling University (BA Hons in Creative Writing, 1st Class).
As a director, I create work that is energetic, collaborative and truth-pursing; with experience in both developing new writing and adapting pre-existing texts.
My approach is one of leading through listening, ensuring ideas are stoked communally and every contributor sees a part of themselves within the final show.
To date, much of my work has been in creating touring productions for children and devising theatre with students/young people – though I am also keen to experiment with work more suited to adult audiences, exploring themes like parenthood, totalitarianism and mental health awareness.
I have led casting workshops, spearheaded rehearsals on short deadlines, and managed multiple casts of the same production simultaneously.
My recent credits include The Play Play (Hopscotch Theatre), Cinderella (Hopscotch Theatre); Playthrough (A Play, a Pie and a Pint), Quietus (A Play, a Pie and a Pint); Burn’s Last Supper (Hopscotch Theatre); Jack & the Beanstalk (Hopscotch Theatre); Sandcastles (Brite Theatre); Donald and Benoit (Pitlochry Festival Theatre); PLOP in the Ocean (Hopscotch Theatre); Room to Improve (Baker Street Productions); Go (Stage2Stage), and When the Penny Drops (PPP).
